Recap: Black History Month 2021

At the Waldorf School, teachers incorporate current and historical stories and lessons about peoples and cultures around the world, Maryland and the other regions of the United States throughout the year. Children’s lessons will vary based on age, grade, and the class configuration. This last month teachers created meaningful ways to highlight Black History Month. Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work has inspired expansion of  our programmatic offerings.

Green Dragon Bytes: Northern Paper Wasps

Check out a nature studies blog from Ms. Jung as she finds a new friend on campus which signals that Spring must be on the way!

As the ice melted and the sunshine warmed everything up we are starting to see signs that Spring is coming. This week on campus we’ve had a couple of nature encounters with a native wasp species who can be found here in Maryland: the Northern Paper Wasp.

Honoring Black History, Black Lives Matter in our Middle School

Our middle school students are celebrating historic figures, heroes and icons in many ways this year.

When the student council expressed to the middle school teachers that they'd like to hear more about prominent Black History biographies, the community was able to come together and create a meaningful experience. Each teacher researched interesting biographies to present to their respective classes and then each class had a student present a powerful essay to the entire middle school this week.

Green Dragon Bytes: Climbing toward Fun

Check out a nature studies blog from Ms. Jung. Our Cherry Tree friends climbed all the way to the top of (a short) tree. They were very proud of their achievement, and happily played up there for quite a long while.

Green Dragon Bytes: Swinging into a New Year

As we returned from our holiday break, our children were eager to get back to observing and questioning nature.

Happy New Year!

In Nature Studies, we have been blessed with some pretty nice weather this week, and everyone had a great time swinging on the vine … until it broke! No one was hurt, no worries, the thick cover of last year’s leaves cushioned the fall.

Partnering with UMBC to Create Meaningful Experiences

WSB welcomed lessons from University of Maryland, Baltimore County students earlier this month and the experience was truly meaningful for everyone involved.

Our students, in grades 4-8, welcomed a group of UMBC students who are studying Arts in Education, to lead their music classes earlier this month.

Third grade parent Airi teaches the UMBC class that explores teaching artistry where she said "music is taught experientially so that personal relevance could be found within a work of art."

Winter Garden: Walking the Spiral

Although we weren't able to celebrate our Winter Garden in the same ways as years past, we created a new way to walk the spiral outdoors and it was as beautiful as ever.

This year has forced us to really get creative in how we are celebrating festivals. While we are separate, and still together, we were able to have a very beautiful Winter Garden with some of our classes this year.

Second Grade: I'm Thankful For...

After hearing an adaptation of the Mohawk Thanksgiving address, second graders shared what they are most thankful for this year.

Green Dragon Bytes: Enjoying Fall Foliage

As we approach Thanksgiving break, our children took some time to enjoy the wonders of nature and be grateful for such beauty.

Hey, hey-

These will be the last nature studies pictures for a while as we head into our Thanksgiving break. During nature studies this week, first and second grades were busy moving things around the woods. I loved watching, and facilitating their cooperative efforts of moving fallen trees, and making leaf heaps for jumping in and throwing around. Fun was had by all.

Have a happy safe Thanksgiving.
