What Works: the Waldorf Approach to Nature Studies

what works nature 2016

Schools that move beyond the classroom walls and engage children in the natural world report significant student gains in academic performance and social development. Join Michel Anderson (Ecoliteracy Coordinator) on Wednesday, April 13 at 7:00pm or Friday, April 22 at 8:30am to learn more about the Waldorf commitment to immersing children in the natural world. View the flyer or share on facebook.

The Waldorf School of Baltimore is deeply committed to developing each child’s capacity to stand in healthy relation to the earth. The goal of our ecoliteracy and sustainability initiatives are to empower students with the knowledge, confidence, and ethical foundation to meet the challenges they will face in modern society with depth, imagination, and purpose. WSB has been an official Maryland Green School since 2010. Since then, we have continued to explore and expand the vision of what it means to be a green school and socially responsible member of our larger community. WSB is also an official Eco-School.

WSB is proud to announce in September 2015 our Lower School, 1st - 5th grade, students are offered a once a week Nature Study class. Nature-based education is about grounding our understanding of the world and its complexities in the beauty of nature. In the Waldorf tradition of offering developmentally appropriate learning, students will engage in observational journaling, self-guided questioning, pattern recognition exercises, math and literacy exercises, local and natural history lessons, and more.
